Playing with Playdough
At Perfect Piece of the Puzzle Inc., we know that play is more than just fun — it’s essential to a child’s development. One of the simplest, most effective ways to support learning, creativity, and motor development is through playdough. This soft, squishy tool offers countless opportunities for growth, especially for neurodivergent and developmentally disabled children.
Here are just a few ways playdough supports a child’s development:
Fine Motor Skill Development
Manipulating playdough strengthens the small muscles in the hands and fingers, helping children build the coordination needed for writing, buttoning clothes, and using utensils.
Sensory Learning
Playdough offers a rich tactile experience. The texture, color, and even the smell engage multiple senses, which is calming and especially beneficial for children with sensory processing needs.
Emotional Regulation
Kneading and squeezing playdough can help calm the body and mind. It’s a therapeutic tool for releasing stress and expressing emotions in a safe, hands-on way.
Cognitive Growth
Creating shapes or pretend objects with playdough boosts problem-solving, planning, and imagination. Children experiment, make decisions, and develop critical thinking through creative play.
Social & Communication Skills
When children play together, they share tools, take turns, and talk about their creations, practicing social interaction and building language.
Pre-Writing & Academic Readiness
Rolling dough into lines, circles, and shapes helps children prepare for writing. You can also incorporate literacy and numeracy by forming letters, numbers, or patterns.
How to Make No-Cook DIY Playdough
This simple recipe is perfect for making multiple small batches in different colors. It’s safe, affordable, and easy enough to make at home or in the classroom.
You’ll Need:
1 cup flour
¼ cup salt
½ tablespoon cooking oil
½ cup hot water
A few drops of food coloring
Large mixing bowl
Measuring cups and spoons
Wooden spoon
Wax paper or parchment (for kneading or storing)
Directions:
Mix flour and salt in a large bowl.
In a separate cup, combine hot water, oil, and food coloring.
Slowly pour the liquid into the dry ingredients. Stir until combined.
Knead the dough with your hands until smooth. Add a little more flour if it’s too sticky, or a few drops of water if it’s too dry.
Let it cool, then let the creativity begin!
Tip: Store playdough in an airtight container or ziplock bag to keep it soft for days.
